Double strand break repair from P element-induced breaks

A mobile P element is inserted into the white locus and another P element carrying a template white gene is present elsewhere in the genome. Excision of the element in white sets off a gap repair mechanism, ending in some genetic information from the ectopic template being copied in to fill the gap. A specially-made template gene, named walter, was used to allow accurate tracking of the conversion tracts.
